US; Urges India not to buy defense equipment from Russia

UMMATIMES - The Secretary of Defense of the United States (US), Lloyd Austin urged India not to buy defense equipment from Russia. This was done after India planned to buy S400 air defenses from Russia.

"We definitely urge all our allies, our partners to stay away from Russian equipment ... and absolutely avoid any kind of acquisition that would trigger sanctions on our behalf," Austin said Sunday.

Austin emphasized that the US will impose sanctions on its allies if it buys defense equipment from Russia. Last year, the US also imposed sanctions on Turkey for buying S400 defense equipment from Russia.

India made an initial payment of US $ 800 million in 2019 to Russia.

The chairman of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Bob Menendez, urged Austin to alert India. This is because President Joe Biden stressed that he rejected India's plan to buy defense equipment from Russia.
