Canada Will Increase Refugee Entry Quota
Canada will take in more refugees and their families this year. This is part of Canada's efforts to overcome the global crisis.
UMMATIMES - According to the Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Marco Mendicino, Canada will accept almost twice as many refugees who need protection, namely those who have arrived in Canada or family members of refugees who have arrived in the country first and applied.
Canada is planning to accept about 45,000 refugees from the previous 23,500 refugees. With this addition, the Government of Canada will spend an additional C$ 3 million (Rp 34 billion), which will be phased out over two years to fund refugees. The funds are also to expand the program of resettlement of refugees through economic immigration.
"We hope to facilitate their travel by taking into account the restrictions on travel regulations (the Covid-19 pandemic)," Mendicino said, referring to family members of refugees.
This year Canada plans to resettle 36,000 refugees. This is different from the status of a person in protection condition, where people with this status will be transferred directly to Canada by agencies such as UNHCR and receive refugee status upon arrival in the destination country.
According to Mendicino, Canada will probably accept migrants from the Central America region, which is also to help the United States which is struggling with the increasing number of refugees there.
