Israel Calls Iran's New President Extremist
Israel calls Iran's newly elected President Ebrahim Raeisi an "extremist" leader committed to Iran's nuclear ambitions.
UMMATIMES - “Iran's new president, known as the Butcher of Tehran, is an extremist responsible for the deaths of thousands of Iranians. He is committed to the regime's nuclear ambitions and its global terror campaign," Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid said.
Ministry spokesman Lior Haiat said in a Twitter post that Raeisi's election demonstrated Iran's "true" intention to become a nuclear power.
Raeisi is an "extremist figure, committed to Iran's rapidly growing military nuclear program, his election making clear Iran's true malice intentions, and should spark serious concern among the international community," Haiat said, calling on the international community to "immediately" stop Iran's nuclear program. .
Raeisi, head of the ultra-conservative judiciary, garnered 17.92 million votes in Friday's election, beating three rivals with a landslide victory. The turnout, according to the Interior Ministry, was 48.8 percent, the lowest in Iran's history.
In 2018, former US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew Washington from the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, in a move to bring Tehran back into negotiations that it hoped would lead to a "better" deal.
Talks between Iran and Western powers to revive the pact have taken place in Vienna recently.
