China wants to expand cooperation with Europe

Chinese President Xi Jinping wants to expand cooperation with Europe. This was revealed by Xi during a video call with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday (5/7).

UMMATIMES - China Central Television (CCTV) reported that Xi told Macron and Merkel that China and Europe are expected to expand cooperation to respond to global challenges. Xi also expressed hope that Europe could play a more active role in international affairs. These include achieving strategic independence and offering a fair, transparent and impartial environment for Chinese companies.

Merkel's office confirmed that the three leaders exchanged views on EU-China relations. They also discussed international trade, climate protection and biodiversity. "Talks also revolved around cooperation in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, global vaccine supplies, and international and regional issues," Merkel's office said in a statement.

In May, the European Parliament stopped ratifying a new investment pact with China. The suspension is carried out until Beijing lifts sanctions against EU politicians. It deepens the rift in Sino-European relations, by denying larger EU companies access to China.
