Pfizer Pockets 50 Million Dose of Child Vaccine Contract in US

Pharmaceutical companies Pfizer Inc and BioNTech SE on Thursday said they expect to ship more than 50 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine to the United States government by the end of April. April will be the time America prepares to vaccinate children.

Ummatimes - The move comes after an outside advisory panel of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) voted on Tuesday to recommend authorizing the vaccine in children aged 5-11 years. The FDA's decision on administering the vaccine to this age group is still pending. If permitted and then recommended by the US Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) advisory panel.

The two companies hope to ship the vaccine soon, at a dose of 10 micrograms for children, as directed by the US government. So far, the US government has secured 600 million doses of the vaccine for domestic use and an additional one billion doses for donation to low- to middle-income countries.

The two companies expect preliminary clinical trial data on the use of the vaccine in children, aged 2-5 years and 6 months-2 years, to be out in the fourth quarter of this year or early in the first quarter of 2022, Reuters reported.
