China Overwhelmed Again with COVID-19 Spike Due to Cases from Overseas

China's National Health Commission or NHC revealed, the COVID-19 outbreak in China is now growing rapidly. The transmission of COVID-19 soared due to cases from abroad, especially in the northeastern border area.

An NHC official said there were 377 cases of COVID-19 in the country with symptoms in the October 17-29 range.

"In the past 14 days, 14 provincial regions have reported new locally transmitted cases or asymptomatic carriers," NHC spokesman Mi Feng said.

"The outbreak is still rapidly evolving, and the situation for controlling the virus is severe and complicated," he added.

For example, the northeastern city of Heihe, which lies near China's Amur River or the border with Russia, reported 26 local cases as of October 29.

"This spike in the outbreak has proven a weakness of mind among some local authorities," said another NHC official Wu Liangyou.

Due to the spike in COVID-19, China is now tightening access at ports of entry. Testing is also being intensified.

So far, the results from the sequencing show that the cluster in Heihe is not associated with a spike in northwest China. Seeing this fact, it indicates that there is a new source of the virus from abroad.

Meanwhile in big cities, officials have promised to tighten restrictions on any international activities in order to minimize the risk of imported cases.

China will also speed up vaccination of children aged three to 11 by the end of December. However, those at high risk did not receive the vaccine.
