Fourth Wave of Corona in Europe, Austria Lockdown Again Germany Will Follow

Austria Lockdown Again Germany Will Follow

Austria will be the first country in western Europe to reimpose a full lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. Germany is also predicted to follow Austria's lead.

Ummatimes - The fourth wave of infections is hitting parts of Europe. The government has also taken a number of steps to stem the spread of the virus.

From February, Austria will require all residents to get vaccinated against Covid-19. About two-thirds of Austria's population is fully vaccinated against COVID-19, the lowest number in western Europe.

Corona infections in Austria are among the highest in Europe over the past week. The number of cases reached 991 per 100,000 people.

"We haven't succeeded in convincing enough people to get vaccinated," Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg told a news conference. Austria will start the lockdown on Monday. While the Covid-19 vaccination will start on February 1.

Austria's neighbor Germany is also expected to follow suit.

German Health Minister Jens Spahn asked residents to reduce social contact. Vaccination alone will not reduce the number of cases.

"We are in a state of national emergency," Spahn told a news conference.

Currently, according to Spahn, intensive care units in Germany have not yet reached their peak even though they are already full. "I dare not predict what the situation will be at Christmas," he said.

Chancellor Angela Merkel said yesterday Germany would restrict most public life in areas where hospitals are full of coronavirus patients.
