First, Daily Cases of Covid in Tokyo Reach 20 Thousand

Tokyo's daily Covid-19 cases rose above the 20,000 mark for the first time on Wednesday (2/2/2022). Tokyo reported 21,576 new cases, shifting the previous record of 17,631 cases on Friday (28/1/2022) last week.

The Covid-19 hospital occupancy rate in Tokyo edged up to 51.4 percent. Previously, officials said that the state of emergency would be implemented if the occupancy rate reached 50 percent.

But now they say the decision depends on the number of severe cases and a number of other factors. The capital Tokyo and most areas in Japan are currently under Covid-19 restrictions.

Osaka Prefecture recorded 11,171 new cases, down from a record 11,881 the previous day. Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno on Wednesday (2/2/2022) said that the government did not plan to declare a state of emergency but remained vigilant.
